On Saturday, September 16th, we said farewell to a beloved member of our community, Matt Hobbie, who wore many hats – a son, a brother, a boyfriend, a friend, a coach, and a stepfather. Matt called Sarasota home.
To Nicole and her son, Beau, Matt was not just a boyfriend and stepfather; he was their world. The magnitude of this loss cannot be overstated.
It is with heavy hearts that we share the sad news of Matt Hobbie passing. His father bravely shared the news with the following words:
“Dear friends, it is with a heavy heart that I must inform you of the passing of our beloved son, Matt. He peacefully went to sleep on Friday night and did not wake up.”

The exact cause of Matt Hobbie passing has not been publicly disclosed, but there is suspicion that it may be related to heart complications.
We will gather to honor Matt’s memory at Bayside Community Church, located at 8200 Bee Ridge Rd. Sarasota, FL, on September 28th at 4:00 p.m.
A native of Sarasota, Florida, Matt Hobbie was raised in Redondo Beach, California. He received his early education at Sarasota High School, graduating in 1993. Matt furthered his studies at the University of Kentucky, focusing on a degree in communication, and completed his education at the University of South Florida, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Communications in 2001.
Matt was renowned as a baseball instructor, exemplifying the essence of a coach who had a profound impact on those he mentored. Coach Hobbie nurtured outstanding baseball players through his unwavering dedication, infectious optimism, and strong work ethic, imparting valuable life lessons along the way.
He was more than just a coach; he was the finest son anyone could hope for. Matt approached life with boundless enthusiasm and passion, always demonstrating unparalleled kindness and consideration for others.
In addition to being an entrepreneur and a former Division 1 athlete, Matt generously dedicated countless hours to coaching Beau’s tackle football team over the past three years. His infectious laughter and readiness to brighten anyone’s day, and more importantly, their self-esteem, endeared him to all.
A GoFundMe campaign, organized by Lindsay Switzer, has provided invaluable support to Matt’s family during this challenging time, helping with funeral arrangements and other expenses. As of now, nine generous donations have raised USD 580 toward the $10,000 goal.
Matt Hobbie’s legacy will forever live on, not only in the hearts of his loved ones but also in the lives he touched through his coaching, mentorship, and unwavering kindness.
