John Gunnello, a beloved figure, 57 years of age was born in Newark and lived in both Belleville and Newark before settling in East Hanover 23 years ago. He led a successful entrepreneurial journey, owning multiple businesses in Newark, namely Direct Waste Service, CarJon Recycling, and Gunnello Services. Additionally, he was the proud proprietor of Vespucci’s Marketplace in East Hanover.
Beyond his accomplishments as a business owner, Johnny cherished his role as a devoted husband to his wife of 17 years, Carrie (Gonyea), and a loving father to his son, John William. He held a special place in the hearts of his extended family, being the dear son-in-law of Bill and Maryellen Gonyea, brother of Maria Favata, and the caring brother-in-law of Billy Gonyea and his wife Kerry.
Johnny also shared a close bond with his nieces, Alexa and Lucas Gonyea, and was connected to his relatives, Michael and Susan Gunnello, as well as Michelle Gunnello and Denise Gunnello-Russoniello, among others. Throughout his life, Johnny formed many meaningful connections, considering numerous friends as part of his chosen family.

Visitation to celebrate Johnny’s life took place at the Leonardis Memorial Home, Inc., 210 Ridgedale Avenue, Florham Park, with an opportunity for friends and family to pay their respects on Sunday from 2-6pm. On Monday, a Funeral Mass was held at 10:30am at St. Lucy’s Church in Newark, followed by an entombment at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum in East Hanover.
