The chain of events leading to this unfortunate incident began when the Athens Highway Patrol Post received reports of a collision at approximately 5:02 PM on that fateful day. Responding swiftly, troopers arrived at the scene just eleven minutes later. Their investigation revealed that Caitlyn Laughlin, a resident of Grove City, Ohio, was behind the wheel of a 2016 Audi Q5, traveling eastward on U.S. 33.
On the other side of this ill-fated encounter was John Ashley, operating a 2022 Freightliner Cascadia while towing a 2016 Wabash Trailer. Ashley, hailing from Winchester, Tennessee, found himself in the path of the Audi when it lost control and veered into the grassy median on the left side of the eastbound lanes. Tragically, the Audi collided head-on with the Freightliner as it entered the westbound lanes of traffic.
Both Caitlyn and John Ashley were wearing their seatbelts at the time of the collision, but the impact was devastating. The Hocking County Coroner’s Office pronounced Caitlyn Laughlin deceased at the scene, a heartbreaking moment that would forever alter the lives of those who knew and loved her.
