On February 25, 2024, a 25-year-old member of the United States Air Force named Aaron Bushnell took drastic action outside the Embassy of Israel in Washington, D.C. He set himself on fire in protest against the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the support the U.S. provides to Israel. He broadcasted this act live on Twitch, expressing his refusal to be complicit in what he called genocide, and shouted “Free Palestine” as he burned. Bushnell suffered critical injuries and passed away the following day in the hospital.
Before his self-immolation, Aaron Bushnell, who worked as a DevOps engineer in the Air Force and studied software engineering, left behind a will and a message for the media. He also posted a final message on Facebook, challenging others to consider their response if faced with atrocities like slavery, apartheid, or genocide, suggesting that complacency was akin to participation.
This incident marked the second self-immolation in protest against the Gaza conflict at a diplomatic outpost of Israel in the U.S. Previously, in December 2023, a woman had set herself on fire at the Israeli Consulate in Atlanta.
